I had to smile when I read your post. Put 100 woodworkers in a room and you'll will get 120 opinions on how to do most any operation, however 99 will admit that finishing is their weakest (and often most frustrating) function.
It is where magic, science, voodoo and luck all mix without any real hope of repeatable results. Ah, but when all the stars align, the weather cooperates and the wood gods smile on you, the results are INCREDIBLE!

Maybe this will get us 'back on subject'.
There are some things better left 'unfinished'.
Nice to be able to get back and resume finishing.
And in extreme cases, refinish.
