I know I’m sounding cheap (frugal?) but I’m just not ready to put $400+ into it for this one project. Any further ideas?
And to be clear, I don't think the head would be "hanging" any different than if I had the double-tilt system.

No SS will not sell the posts separately.
Yes they are reversible with sufficient effort. The pins securing the post to the trunion are tapered and must be driven out the correct direction. Needless to say reinsertion has the same issue. Be sure to check hole(all four on each post) alignment prior to reinserting(driving) taper pins home. The holes may not be 'centered'.
You could simply reverse the carriage if you reverse the posts.
Another option is to get a Mark VII carriage. Or a mark VII table. The rack is reversed on the Mark VII and the table tilts 90 both directions.
I do not think extending the quill that small amount would matter.
I assume the low budget(no parts procurement) is the method of choice.
You have not indicated what your ss version is. It would be helpful so as to eliminate non relevant input.

I have looked on eBay to see if I could find a whole 510 table, considering a "permanent" addition. I will look at the VII table option as well.
I kind of thought that extending the quill a little wouldn't be a big deal.
If the pins are tapered wouldn't that preclude rotating the tubes unless the holes were altered? I don't think I would do that.
I'm still looking at this critically. I will likely do a practice setup just to see the other physical issues I will encounter.

If your objective is to rotate the table 180° an then reinsert the table tubes into the carriage, that can be done. To do this, you must also rotate the table tubes to match the gears in the carriage height adjust.
That can be done and the procedure is simple as previously explained.
I have done that with one of my tables and then returned the tubes to normal configuration two or three times.
Be careful when driving the pins out. I believe that you could easily crack the area around the pins.

The holes in the trunion are different sizes, and the pins need to be correctly matched to them. The holes in the tubes are more or less the same. However my experience(very small) is that the tube holes may not be centered so that they do not align exactly. I am not sure but what that was the result of getting the tubes mixed up and putting them in the wrong trunion bores. Also that was with very old parts.
Be aware the trunion/tube fit is very tight.
For your intended purpose, I would not hesitate. If the pins should for some reason come loose, a hose clamp will remedy that!;)
BTW 510 tables are not cheap!

parallel to the way tubes!:D The
other horizontal axis(when lowered).
But then to further confuse he intends to use it 'raised' to vertical(with the headstock upside down).
