I also spent a few minutes on the quill and spring return. Am very pleased to say that I now have spring return. Quite clean inside and it appears that someone has retrofitted the second bearing in the quill. I am also thrilled with the simplicity of the design and the ease of working on it. Once I have the high speed adjusted, everything should be grand and ready for some serious work.

Thanks again for all the help being posted. Being new to a forum and getting this quality help and comments is refreshing and heartwarming!

She looks purty good(we can overlook the bench tubes). The sanding disk has either the older rubber cement, or(hopefully not) the heat activated adhesive. It needs removing.

That 'second' bearing is probably the spacer that is installed to make insertion of the quill into the headstock easier.

I concur. I thought the same thing with regard to my 1962 Goldie but it's just a spacer. Here is what I found inside my quill. Nick Engler though the same thing until he got his apart.
