I didn't notice anything in the manual about cleaning the sheaves. I'll have a look through the 'your new to you Shopsmith' threads although the innards do seems pretty clean, only enough sawdust to equal 2 or 3 matchsticks.

I did learn that a small tin of oil is the wrong shape/size for getting just a drop or 2 of oil into the holes.

Right now I need to drill and tap 4 holes in an ali plate so I'll get that out the way first as no speed change needed.

The manual will not tell you what to do when you acquire a used ss that has an unknown maintenance history!

The reason for 'cleaning it up' is two fold. 1)To discover any problems or about to be problems so as to not make them worse. 2)To familiarize yourself with the mechanics of the machine.

A zoomspout oiler is what works well. If it hasn't been oiled recently, 5-10 more drops would be a good idea. Oiling is needed for both the control sheave(idler shaft) and the floating sheave(motor shaft).

Can't really disagree...except...I have a few little jobs to do using the Shopsmith and if I put it back together wrong or it needs a big rebuild I want those little jobs out of the way first.

Am pretty sure that the belt(s) need tightening. I'd call them tight enough if I didn't have a manual but it says 1/8" max and it's way more than that. I've managed to stall an adjustable hole cutter doing ~4" diameter in half inch baltic birch ply, still got the required hole though.

No slop in the spindle but once I extend the quill I can rock it side to side, maybe 15 to 25 thou at a guess. Locking the quill stops the slop. Is this usual?

I'd like the headstock and bandsaw rebuild DVDs that Jacob Anderson is selling on ebay but he doesn't ship outside the USA.
