I drill my blanks with a chuck and the drill bit in the tail stock also. To keep the bit centered I start with a center drill. like this:

This keeps the brad point bit centered and produces a better sized hole. I have not had any issues with the tail stock being loose since I added this step.

I have also noticed that I purchased one of the new 7mm bits that is longer to drill a total blank. I do not use it much anymore since I noticed that the bit flexed causing the oblonged hole in my blanks went back to the shorter stiffer bit and just drill one half at a time now.
Even with the bit sharp it still caused problems from time to time, especially in softer wood.

Yup. Don't need an innovative chuck. "Shopsmith does everything."

The best news here being there are as many ways to do any job as there are individuals ready to take on a task. I pray we all respect the variety of methods available and endorse the diversity. Wouldn't it be neat if our elected officials were able to open the steel traps known as their minds and try something new. Thanks for all the great ideas illustrated here I love hearing them. Wow just think of it perhaps they could create jobs rather than destroying same. Fjimp
