My Shopsmith original does not have the reverse taper either, just a nice flat. Note that the flat does not run all of the way out to the end which would help keep anything from slipping off of the end.
I was looking at it today (as I was moving it to the basement shop) and noticed that at some time I have used "something" with a sharp set-screw that has made a deepish ring mark in the flat. Possibly one of my extra Jacobs chucks. Not really a big problem, just the kind of thing I try to avoid. Flat ended brass tipped set-screws don't do that. The brass tip acts like a brake and keeps them from loosening up.
I need to get some more of those.
