Art's approach will do the job easily and cheaply. We also looked at this subject fairly thoroughly a couple of years ago when I was doing the first build on the Push-me / Pull-me drillpress.

I have not really needed it but then I have not been drilling anything hard or using the mortising attachment.
Lots of possible variations and as long as it works for you that is all that matters. :)

We have talked about it and here is my solution. A cheap and dirty drill press table stabilizer made from the cutoffs.

Dusty, I really like your idea for fixed-positioning the carriage in drill press mode. Would you be willing to share the dimensions of the cut-outs of your inserts? Hank

I will but I'll have to measure them and create a simple drawing.

I did that before I built them but for some reason discarded the Sketchup file. This a strange for me because I normally "keep everything".

I did not annotate that dimension. I apologize. The holes are 1 3/4" in diameter.

The ones I made are 4"x13" and are 3/4" thick. Yes, these dimensions are optional. I have one that is 1/4" thick and another that is 1/2" and I plan to create a couple more that are 3/4" thick.

This assortment allows me to set some different heights (if needed).

Do I understand correctly that this jig is needed because your carriage slips down the tubes when you are drilling? The carriage on my shopsmith does not slide, even when mortising. Could that be because I have a 500, or because my tubes are a bit "rough" (not polished)?

I did not have a serious slippage problem but I wanted to avoid any at all. This Mark V is a shorty that is more or less dedicated to drill press mode and jointer.

As for why yours does not slip: it might be because you have a 500 but I think you have to tell me. Does the 500 carriage (and headstock for that matter) lock differently than does the 510/520?
