Of course it can. Just be sure the sanding surface (disk) is not flexing, and the work piece is not flexing. The belt sander will be more efficient due to uniform speed, uniform direction, larger surface area of abrasive.

Your method "should" work.

In the original ('53 10ER) PTWFE, Robert showed a way to joint using the same method. Unless you have some flex, (table, disc, wood, way tubes) your method should work. Of course, he was going from back to front, in that method.

I'm thinking, putting the work piece(s) stationary, and advancing the disc sander into the work should work OK. A spinning flat disc should make a flat surface.

You, (since you're using a Shopsmith) have that advantage. You want to sand on the falling side of the disc, not the rising side, and below the center of the disc.

If it were me, and having my extensive collection of antique Mark 10 parts, I'd just set one of my rip fences to the required angle, and sand to my heart's desire. (Can a Mark Series rip fence be adjusted out of parallel? My mark 10 stuff can.) Worst case scenario, I don't clamp the front end down with the Shopsmith rip fence clamp, but use a C clamp on both ends.

Yes any but a 520* can be offset that much.(*I think!:rolleyes:)

*But a 520 can be shimmed.

You might also try sanding both pieces at once to achieve an identical angle.
