Using Dusty's jigs to fix the height of the table, how about building a fixed-height leg support that would go straight down to the floor from the outboard end of the table top? I realize that this version would give up flexibility (the leg support would work at only one table top height), but would a straight leg to the floor be stronger than the the angled support piece? I am thinking about mortising needing good support.

The straight leg may be stronger; I don't know the mechanics involved in that.
The straight leg was my first solution. It worked unless I kicked it out from under the table.
Maybe, when mortising, there needs to be more support. However, is mortising really any different than drilling large holes. The right speed and sharp bits are important.

Mortising requires substantially more support. Although the center drill bit does not, the chisel is essentially the same as pushing 4 chisels at once.
That support needs to be directly under the quill.

Trying to relocate either the carriage or the headstock after you've gone vertical will help to encourage your effort.

Concept changes to that jig:
Based on my concerns for the table be stressed and general comments from the forum, I have changed my jig. I think the attached images tell the story.

I do intend to replace those two braces with a wide panel. I did not have cut offs that would work so that will have to wait until after the next furniture project.
