Latest Turned Screwdriver

Greetings!

I've turned screwdrivers before, such as shown in my other thread:

My latest trick is to alter the turning/assembly sequence so I can actually turn a bit of decoration into the Brass Ferrule. I like how this has dressed it up:

That wood is rosewood. So... I bored my blank and cut the 'tenon' for epoxying the ferrule onto the blank. Then I was able to use my standard parting-tool to cut some minor coves into the brass. I decided to do this because some of my earlier screwdrivers looked a little too bulky at the ferrule.

I need to turn a herd of file handles. I have turned a few in the past and used several different items for ferrules. Years ago I used to do lamp repairing as a side enterprise and had some brass spacer rings that worked well.
I do a good bit of plumbing and love using PEX. I have the press to compress the copper rings for both 1/2" and 3/4" PEX tubing.

I plan to just turn the handles for a snug slip fit for the copper ring and after pressing the file tang into the hole using the crimper tool to clamp the ring very tightly.
The rings are cheap to buy but the tool is a little over $100 so I wouldn't buy the set just for the woodshop

but since I have it anyway it should serve my needs well.

Looks nice, so here's my question. Did you start out with an old screwdriver (like one with a plastic handle) and remove the handle and use the existing blade, or did you start out with new steel? Just a noob question as I have several old mismatched screwdrivers in my mishmash of tools.

I have always used screwdriver kits from either Rockler or (via mail-order) Penn State Industries. However I've seen one magazine article about a guy who would 'gut' cheap plastic-handle screwdrivers to use the pieces for his turnings.

I have had a few older plastic screwdrivers in which the plastic cracked and broke for whatever reason. They all had flanges or small tabs on the shaft to help keep the plastic stay secured. I guess you could grind those down with a grinder then re-purpose them if you wanted. I might try that one day when I get the SS cleaned, lubricated and aligned. Will have to practice for a while first, as I haven't turned anything in more than 20 years.
