Engine Needed Cleaning

I went out to use my ss for the first time today and the engine makes a whining noise. The engine will not turn. Could I have damaged it by cleaning it up?

I would remove the belt cover to see if they are in place. It could be insufficient tension on the lower belt, but I'll leave that for the experts here.

I hate to nit pick but your Shopsmith doesn't have an engine. It has a motor.

I suppose someone must be able to adapt a Briggs & Stratton engine to a Shopsmith- but it most likely be a 10E/ER. An issue for the 10E/ER forum on Yahoo.
Seriously, it's very hard to tell with what you've shared. This is a question I am unable to suggest anything to you as I am not sure of what you mean by whining. Have you lubricated the motor sheaves? When you say whining, a bearing comes to mind.
But if the motor is not turning, do not try more than a few seconds with the power switch on as you'll fry your motor. Cleaning is a good thing for the motor. Like Swampgator suggests, pull the belt cover off and you'll be able to see what is going on.
Well after you clean & lube it, come on back & provide an update.

I've heard of 2 stroke engines being fitted to an ER. (Most 2 stroke engines will run in any position, so the Hz mode as well as vertical are possible.) The carburetor might have some limitations, if it has a float bowl.
And think. No extension cords!

Motor-engine. Depending on who you are, there may not be a difference.
Just try to tell one of the NASCAR racers that their car has an engine, and they will correct you and tell you that it is a motor.

Then you can ask them why is it in a motor car(riage).
