5/8" vs. 1 1/4" arbors for blades?

I'm attempting to upgrade from 500-to-510 syatem, but am reading confusing talk about needing to use 1 1/4" arbor for saw blades, for clearances of new saw guards, top and bottom. Is the difference in the 5/8"-to-1 1/4" arbors in the size of hole in the center of the saw blade? or does this refer to the length of the individual arbors, for clearance of saw guards?
Any help on this would be appreciated...

It refers to the bore size of the blade and you use the arbor size that matches the bore of the saw blade. The 510/520 versions of the 1-1/4" and 5/8" arbors are longer than the corresponding ones for the 500. The 500 versions will not work with the 510/520 blade guards.

Thanks for the response to my question. I was thinking that there was a "length" difference between the two, so that the blade could sit square in the guard assembly, correct?

Right. There's a 500 and a 510/520 version of each 5/8" and 1-1/4" abors.
I was under the impression that with a 500 arbor on a 510/520, you could just extend the quill to make up the distance. But maybe that's just to hit the slot in the table?

That is as I unnerstanit.
But I 'think' to position in the guard as well.
Is my 'thinking' correct?

No. The guard is mounted to the motor, not the table

Ah so! The guard is attached to the quill and would move with it.
Hopefully that is my 'oversight for the day'!:D
My lack of experience with a blade guard has been exposed!;)

You would have thought that, since the guards are plastic, and they mount on the motor, that someone, (Shopsmith), would have thought far enough ahead, to mold the lower guard so the clearances would be there without having two different arbor lengths, thereby confusing, "US", "the-general-woodcrafting-public"...just a thought !!!

The problem is not the guard per se. It's the larger table of the 505 Plus.
wider table means further distance from the headstock to the blade cut out.

And
THAT is the real reason for the two sizes. The 505+ guard was designed to accept the 505+ arbors.
A 'common' lower guard for both 500 and 505+ is unattainable since the 500 does not have room for the 505+ guard.
