hi all...

I've got my new (to me) Mark V model 510 and when I was looking it over, I found that the horizontal way tube lock isn't engaging properly due to the way tube appearing like they're too long to allow the lock to function properly. Unfortunatly, I don't have a picture to show you... in reading the manual I didn't see any obvious adjustment for this.... Any ideas?

Are you talking about the latch at the "tail?" If so, check to see if the tubes are all the way into the tiebar. You might also consider whether the tubes are set properly into the pivot end. In either case, it doesn't take much to throw off the fit. After all, the blessing of the SS is precision. Can be its curse as well.mt

Hi,

I guess I'm a little lost as to what the problem is and even where it is. If you can get some picture that would be great. Other wise if you download this:
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/productmanuals/MKVSTDPartsList%20_1_14.pdf
and give us part numbers or reference numbers it would help.

Or maybe the above post already answered you question?

My thinking is a lot like reible's. My guess is you are using the wrong word (way tubes). If the headstock and the carriage slide back and forth on the way tubes, they are not the problem.

Try your question again, and don't feel bad about not knowing the names of the parts right away. It takes a little familiarization to know the right words. Part numbers will help us to help you.

P.S. Glad your pick up transport worked!!

I am not certain that I understand your problem but if I assume that your way tubes are too long thus not allowing the Head Rest Lock mechanism to engage properly - I would first suggest that you make certail the way tubes are seated as deep as they will go in the Base Arm at one end and the Tie Bar at the other end.

I have taken a couple photos that I hope will help. I have more than I can post at one time so there will be a 2nd or 3rd post.

The first is the Tie Bar. Note that the way tubes are all the way inserted. The Tie Bar is secured to the way tubes by set screws.

If you put the Shopsmith in the drill press mode, you can loosen the set screws and take the tie bar off. Put the carriage and headstock all the way to the right end to do this.

osx-addict,

I am not certain that I understand your problem. Based on the statement that your way tubes are too long, thus not allowing the head rest lock to engage properly - I would guess that your way tubes are not fully seated in either the Base Arm or the Tie Bar.

I've taken a couple photos that might help. At least they might help us make sure we are talking about the right parts.

I've got a couple photos of the other end of the bench tubes (right side) but they aren't too revealing and may not be applicable to your problem at all.

One does show the bench tubes and the tube lock bar which is what holds the bench tubes into the base. If these (bench tubes) were not fully seated the span would be too long not too short.

The bench tubes are secured at both ends the same way.

A common problem and often not done correctly. I went looking for some instructions but did not find any in my extensive Shopsmith library. I have now added this instruction to my disk file library.

If the way tubes are fully seated in the base arm and way tube tie bar then check that the bench tubes are not pass the small raised stops in the headrest and base. These raised stops may be hard to see or feel with the bench tubes in place but they are there. These stops are very critical as they determine the SPTs and extension table alignments. I have a set of sawhorses made to set the bench tubes on so I can slightly loosen the bolts holding the bench tubes and gentle tap/move each end to make sure that the bench tubes are resting againest the raised stops. Tighten the bench tube bolts. Then recheck if the tie bar fits in the headrest. Sometimes, it takes a few tries to get this adjusted correctly. If the tie bar alignment is still too long, I loosen the bench tube bolts at one end. Then make sure that both tubes are moved the same amount away from the raised stops. Only make a maximum of about a 1/4" movement as the tubes may not longer be supported by the last rib in the ends. Tighten the bolts and check again. If the tie bar location is too short, I loosen its setscrews and lock the tie bar. Then unlock and retighten the tie bar set screws. The bench tubes are 52 3/4" and the way tubes are 52", same OD. I always measure to make sure the right set of tubes is used in the right location.

Bill,

Is it possible to assemble with the way tube set and the bench tube set reversed.

This would make the total span 3/4" shorter than it should be. Would the dimensions even allow the bench tubes to then be inserted where the way tubes should be.

It seems that it would certainly make the tie bar not seat properly in the head rest.
