Determine the Angle with No Angle Gauges

I was browsing through some old "Fine Woodworking" magazines the other day and came across an article that I found interesting.

With just the information that can be derived from the attached drawing, can you determine what the angle of a miter gauge would be if the face of the miter gauge was flush against the lower edge of the steel ruler.

The 10 25/64 is superflous.(except to insure the top right angle is 90);)

Yes, mathematically it is superfluous but having that dimension helps during setup.

I enjoy doing exercises like this. It reminds me of how much of my schooling was really useful. This was a valuable lesson that many teachers don't seem to get across very well. I know that if may trig and algebra teacher had used exercises such as these, I would have learned better.

Just think - what would it be like if the math teacher and the shop teacher were one in the same.

You guys could make this a lot easier by simply making the 12" ruler only 10" long. By doing that, the length of the vertical element (side opposite) can be read directly from the sine table.:) :) :)

Ah, but the 12" ruler is more commonly found. Also the info Dusty is passing on does not refer to trig tables.:eek:

I consider this to be a very useful methodology.:cool:

Any other 'magic' dimensions Dusty?


Oh and do not forget to multiply by 10!:D

The rest of us will multiply trig tables by 12.:rolleyes:
