Greetings fellow sawdust makers.

I decided to take the lathe chisels that I own but have never used and put them out where I will see them every day, in the hope that I will start turning. I acquired these chisels over the years in the "boxes of stuff" that accompanied 2 used Shopsmith purchases and a Craftsman table saw. I used a 10 foot piece of pvc and a few wood scraps for these racks. I think the pvc really made a mess of my saw blade.

I was thinking just yesterday that I needed to make a rack for my lathe chisels, and this design looks like a quick and easy solution.

Turning is lots of fun. Try it, I think you will like it.

ps Where I live the black pipe is made of ABS, the PVC is white.

Thanks Dick and Ron. I copied a design that Mr. Google showed me. I like your first pen Ron, I hope to make one soon. How do you sharpen your chisels?

I did not realize that I bought abs pipe, not pvc. I wonder if there's much difference when used as intended for plumbing?

There is! pvc = cold/waste cpvc = hot abs=waste

Check your local area building codes!!!

There are locations where ABS can be used only for DWV (drain/waste/vent).

Be aware that there are version of PVC that is not potable.

You've got to love Mr. Google.

Did see the pens and wands I did this past weekend?

For sharpening I use a 1" sander/grinder that I bought at Lee Valley,

but just use what ever sharpening equipment you have, a bench grinder, belt sander, strip sander or disk sander should all work if set up properly.

So far I have mostly used the skew, at first it was hard work and hard to control but after I got it sharpened and honed properly it cuts easily with a light touch.

To sharpen and hone the skew I do it like Cap'n Eddie
