Hi everyone, I found an old mark v yesterday for 150, came with table top, narrow support table, miter gauge, fence, disk dander, old blade and a lathe tailstock with lathe tool , that's about all.
motor runs but the speed dial is slipping pretty much, do not know if this is going to be a minor problem or perhaps more problems, have not opened it up yet, but I have another headstock on the shelf, I mainly bought it for the base,
Someone did not take care of it but the way tubes look decent and I want to make it a shorty for the band saw and disk sander,
not sure how much to take off the way tubes.
anyone had a problem with the speed control?

If by 'slipping' you mean the knob turns and the speed changes but the dial indicator does not, the pinion gear on the knob is stripped You can get a fixed one on e-bay for much less than a new one from SS and it has a steel gear rather than the aluminum gear on the original one(send your old one as a core ).
If the knob is slipping on the shaft(dial rotates, but the speed does not change) the knob is slipping on the shaft. This may make the knob difficult to remove due to likely burring. Once removed the burrs can be filed down and the knob reattached correctly with the set screw in the depression on the shaft.
Not that I think this is necessary, but do not turn the knob(towards slow) unless the pulleys are turning or the motor belt is removed.

Thanks for the replies, one more thing, Disk sander is rusted quite a bit, any suggestions on getting the rust cleaned up? thanks again.

Yes, soak it in a shallow pan of Evapo-Rust for 24 hours. Should clean it up nicely. Be sure to cover the pan to prevent evaporation. It can be used over again as well.

Realize that this will also remove the black oxide, so future rust prevention becomes more critical.
