Greeting,

A newbie from Texas! Howdy!

I have taken up turning pens and use a shopsmith I purchased used. I began turning pens this past Feburary with a break during the summer. I love it!

I am now looking into purchasing tools to have the ability to drill my pen blanks on my shopsmith lathe.

What headstock and tailstock drilling Chuck do I need and does shopsmith offer these tools?

When i drilled them on a SS i used it in the horizontal boring setup and clamped the blank to the table and drilled that way. As far as the headstock, SS sells plenty of chucks under their product section.

Newbie here also. I like the horizontal boring method too, and made a simple jig out of mdf to hold the blank in line, and clamp it with a woodworking clamp to the table.

I'd just clamp it to the table, butt it up against the fence, (with a piece of scrap of course) and let the chips fly.

You have one of the best (and least expensive) horizontal drill-presses around, use it.

Thank you all for your replies. I have made a simple jig and have been horizontal drilling. Maybe my jig ain't the best because my drill bits seem to wonder and not centered all the way thru. Seems set up time is taking me longer than I like.

I guess I can build another jig and move forward.

How old is your machine? Maybe you have the single bearing quill? Got a serial #?
