I'm fairly new to wood working and recently became a SS owner. I just received the 5/8 dado arbor and attempted to install an 8" Irwin dado set. However, I was not able to fit all of the spacers and chippers on the arbor. I was only able to get up to 1/2" thick. Is this a normal issue or am I over looking something. Thanks in advance!

You are overlooking something. Any 5/8 dado blade fits just fine on the SS arbor. SS sells standard dado sets that fit their arbor.

Let us start by making sure we are discussing the same arbor. Is this what you have?

If it is, then take the nut, washer and all of the spacers off of the atbor. As I restack the dado set on the arbor, I attempt to to have a similar thickness of spacers on each side of the dado set. Use enough spacers so that after you install the washer and nut there are only a few threads left visible on the arbor shaft.

You should be using ONLY the number of spacers required (along with your dado stack) to occupy those threads.

The large "spacer/washer" and the thinner washers. They are not all required for every set up. If you want a full 3/4" you need to remove the thick spacer/washer.

Let us start by making sure we are discussing the same arbor. Is this what you have?

Yes, that is the arbor that I have. I was able to fit 3 spacers, both chippers and both outside blades(enough for a 1/2" dado). I was hoping to be able to get up to 3/4", but I can't make it fit.

The arbor will allow more then 3/4" when set up like this:

Note the large spacer is not needed or used in this case.

The arrangement from left to right is the nut, the keyed washer(you MUST have this in place), one of the thinner washers with the indented part facing the blade, the blade is where the paper clip is. The other thin washer also has to have the indent facing the blade. The arbor should fit just about any stacked set up to 15/16" if I remember right.

I had to do that just this week. I needed to cut a dado just under an inch wide. I simply removed the thick washer and reassembled things so it all fit.

One other issue to consider is the arbor for the Dado compared to the arbor for the Shaper cutters.

I reworked a Shopsmith document for the cabinet set cutters that helps if you have that arbor as well.
