Hi Everyone

I want to see if I am alone here... or if some of you have done the same. I had a disc mounted to the faceplate on my headstock... and I wanted to drill a 1" diameter hole in the center. Worse yet, the center that I had marked on the face was not concentric from a couple really bad chisel catches that knocked my block off a little.

So - I mounted the dead center in the MT2 tailstock..I turned the tailstock around and installed it so the point was facing the wrong way. On the balance of the center, I mounted the drill chuck and made sure to but it tight to the tailstock and tighten the setscrew very securely. This allowed me to mount a 1" forstner bit in the chuck and drill a hole in the disc by advancing the quill - very cautiously.

I am thinking that since I work at a machine shop, I might ask the guys to make me a steel MT2 adapter that would fit in the tailstock and have the appropriate sized shaft with a reverse tapered flat ground out of it. That way I could mount the drill chuck or disc sander to the tailstock more securely.

Any thoughts?

Coincidentally, a couple of days ago, I made one of these on my Southbend 10k metal lathe by turning down the cylinder portion to the 5/8" diameter. The MT2 stub is sold by Busy Bee Tools here.

$20 for the adapter is even better than the $35 I paid for a MT2 chuck. And the adapter would let you mount the sanding disk to advance workpieces into to square the end.

Here is an alternative adapter for $8.95 from Beall -- http://www.bealltool.com/products/turning/tapers.php but it doesn't have the reverse taper.

That is easy to correct!

think I'll check with ShopSmith and see if theirs is American made, If so it's worth the extra money (to me at least)
