If it haven't happened yet, you will eventually have a project that require the ripping of thin strips, and this super-simple jig/fixture (or is it a fixture/jig?) will not only make that task easy and accurate, but best of all will be some of the safest cutting you've ever done.

I made a similar jig to yours (the sliding feature) years ago for cutting box joints; except using only a single miter gauge. Wanting to make box joints of various widths with one jig. Then I decided to revert back to my original jig for that type of joint; which was a copy of a jig Norm Abram used a few times on The New Yankee Workshop.

Sometimes it's much quicker to make multiple simple jigs, than one complicated jig that tries to do multiple tasks.

So much to cover today! How can you know the correct length to order for your bandsaw? It's actually a simple matter of some 6th grade geometry and a little addition. Also, I found a neat magnetic base LED light that you can use an all your tools and we test an off-the-shelf Bosch bandsaw blade on the Shopsmith bandsaw. This Bosch blade sells for less than half the price of the TimberWolf blade, but it the savings worth it?

Building a surface sander for your Shopsmith (or any wood lathe) is pretty simple and straight forward project. Several people on the Shopsmith Forums https://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum and in the Shopsmith Owners Facebook Group have shared their versions so I figure it's time to share mine. I started with the basic design shared in R.J. DeCristoforo's version of the book "Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone" (PTWWFE) but after building a segmented ring project from 3/4" lumber that required sanding, I learned that I needed to take a different approach. That's where this video begins.

Scott- Thanks for Jack the Ripper - I built something like this to try out. It certainly feels safer than pushing thru the narrow gap...however I'm not 100 % on its safety .

I've noticed on a few passes that once the guide board is sliding along the fence, the guideboard itself will sometimes begin to drift away from the fence behind the cut. This makes me think it could become a kickback item if it were to drift off the fence enough.

Some of this is reduced by the addition of a featherboard on the fence itself pressing down on the Ripper, but it seems like there might be a solution using sliding T-nuts which would still allow for the Ripper to slide along the fence, but disallow any drift away from the fence.

Well- last I checked fence was square to the blade-probably should check again.

I made the spacer board from 1/2 Birch ply- or maybe 3/4 birch ply...its flat and straight.

I guess I should check that it is also square to the blade.

I've always wondered if I could modify and make a wide drum sander with an old Shopsmith planer. The adjustable power feed would be nice. But, if I went through that much trouble; then I might as well buy the real thing. I'd rather make one like yours for as little need I have for a wide sander.

I didn't find any offsets on the fence or the guide board..so i proceeded to over design a solution. Complete with Walnut handle hehe. For me - this keeps the guideboard from drifting away from the fence behind the saw.
