Utah Winter Sunsets

This has been a fantastic winter so far for our drought. The mountains in all of Utah have been pounded. Most basins are at 190% of normal snow pack and many places are over 200%. It has been fairly warm in the Wasatch Front valleys, low 30's/low40's so lots of rain. It rained over night and we got .44" here at the house. Then it turned to snow early this morning and we got about 4". We have had 3" of rain since Jan 1. That does not count all the water content in the snow.

The Great Salt Lake level is at an all time low. However, it has actually risen slightly in January. It almost never does that in January,

The winter sunsets are starting already. Not great today but pretty nice. It has been fairly wet so far this fall. Hopefully the snow pack will be above average again this winter. The average snowfall at Alta ski resort (about 40 miles from here) from 1945 to 2021/22 is 497". The record in that time was 745" in 1985 (I got here in Jul 84). That was the year the lake hit an all time high. State Street in Salt Lake City was a river in the spring. !-15 and !-80 were sand bagged in places where they were close to the lake.

Fast forward to last winter. Alta got 901" of snow. There was no flooding because the snow pack mealted much slower this spring than it did in 1985. Also the lake was already at a record high before the spring run off in 1985. This year the lake was at a record low.

Camera processing does some intentional blurring to 'soften' the image. It is not noticeable with well focused images. Makes off focused worse.

Sharpening function restores those crisp edges(at the expense of some noise generation).

Sometimes it helps, other times not so much.(makes things worse)

i.e. no magic!

John has posted some stunning pictures of Utah Sunsets. I like the one he posted on December 4, 2021 the best so far.

Although not a sunset but a sunrise I thought I would add a picture taken this morning from the deck outside our dining room. This is the view we have from our new home looking at Mount Hood here in Oregon. It is one of the reasons we liked this home as opposed to others we looked at before moving from our previous home of almost 37 years. Sunsets reflecting off Mount Hood have been beautiful too.

Since moving at the end of June we have enjoyed many picturesque sunrises and sunsets at our new home.

Here's hoping we can all enjoy many more sunsets (and sunrises) for years to come.

We haven't had much in the way of sunsets so far this winter. Not very many storms/precipitation that generates the clouds that produce the beautiful sunsets. Today we had some clouds so there was a nice sunset.

That is what we see every day when it is there when we eat dinner looking west out the sliding door on the deck. The Great Salt Lake is about 20 miles west and the mountains in the picture are about 40 miles west on the west side of the lake.

Great photo! Nice to see those warm colors... quite a contrast to the silver and pearl (aka gray) skies in North Idaho of late...

Just a bunch of MK V's. There is a Pro Planer for $250. It has the dust chute and castors. Really dusty but looks in pretty nice shape.
