My conjecture would be they joined out of curiosity and once "in" they determined there was nothing here for them.

The new members who post spam can be dealt with. It is the new member who joins (gains access to the forum) and then seems to disappear into nowhere that concern me. Why are they here and what are they up to? What data are they collecting and what might they do with it when they have it?

You are always complaining that forum members offer opinions here and don't back it up with actual data. I wasn't offering my opinion on this thread, but sharing what I have read in countless news articles that also reference real world data that indicates FB has lost the younger generation. In fact, it is one of the factors behind declining revenues at FB. The data that I referenced is from a company called Statista which is a well respected data aggregator business that sells their data to other companies for market analysis purposes. The sources for their data typically include market research, trade publications, scientific journals and government databases. You may not like the data that I presented, but the data is real and didn't come from some "social media" company. Bottomline is I presented facts backed up by actual data - it wasn't my opinion.

My anecdotal observations about FB have been that only a few young people we know use FB ("young", meaning late-20's). Everyone else we know who uses FB is our age (mid-50's) and older. When the kids were younger, it seems like all the people we knew were on FB and it was used for everything (sports, activities, school events, etc). So much so that my wife and I often got the "what do you mean you're not on FB??!!" response when we would say we don't have a FB account. Nowadays, I can't remember the last time I heard FB mentioned except by a friend of mine who uses it for his business.

I couldn't agree more and this matches my own anecdotal experience. I am the oddball in my family because I refuse to use FB. I have borrowed my Dad's account a couple of dozen times to check out the Shopsmith groups. IF it wasn't for that, I would have no first hand experience with it. All social media is used to sell products so I choose not to feed on the firehose of marketing BS from them since they are an ad revenue business model. Also, why I don't watch TV with commercials anymore...One of the biggest complaints that I have with social media is their employment of engagement based ranking algorithms. These force viral content to the top of your feed so it is all a popularity contest which leads to mob rule. JMO.

Quite the opposite! I welcome opinion as long as it is offered as such. It is ones opinion stated as "fact" that makes my skin crawl.

Hearing opposing opinions is how we learn - especially when our own opinion is wrong.
