Hi All
been reading all the postings on here and this is my first post - have just bought a used shopsmith with the planer, jointer, bandsaw, dust collector, router attachment that fits on the drill press, along with sharpening jigs for the planer knives and for lathe tools, I learnt woodworking in the workshop of my late fathers business, and have done bits on and off through my life including building 3 yachts, 1 wood and the others Glassfibre, but now I want to brush up on my shopsmith knowledge and am also looking for training materials mostly to do with the shopsmith machine, i was thinking Powertool woodworking for everyone.I was derusting te bed of the jointer and it took me a while to figure out how to move the fence off the jointer - (see what years of working with small powertools in a yacht in a marina does:D )

Can I order a copy from Shopsmith - are they still in business? - heard rumors
How do I know which one to get, I looked on Ebay and they all have different covers.

Hi Thanks for the welcome - i have been browsing the shopsmith site, just need to figure out if they will ship to the Azores - PORTUGAL and how much, I am missing a couple of things like lathe tools, which I can probably get from the UK, and save on any import duties, I also am in need of a manual for the dust collector in case theres any gremlins I need to know about and I am missing two of the small bolts that tighten the round serrated aluminium lock handle thingies that stop the table from sliding down, Also I have a few issues with the machine, I hope they arent a roblem, like when I extend the quill, it is stiff for the first few inches, and then extends easily and when it goes back in it is easy and the last inch and a half it is stiff, also when rotating the shaft it makes a bit of noise, the lady i bought it from also a boatbuilder was using it the day before I got it to plane wood, it seems to be in quite good condition, maybe needs a bit of servicing, Will contact the shopsmith site about the things I need. and see what they say.

Thanks, I havent done that yet, did look and they looked clean, but will clean them anyhow - I dont think the quill was extended very often, it was used by the previous owner as a saw and for driving the planer, mostly, so I think it needs a bit of exercise. I think I am going to give it a good looking over following the maintenance and setup booklet that i got with it. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the help, this is a nice forum.

Does this mean you have a model 10 E/ER and the table lock knobs are missing the threaded bolt?????

Hi No it is a mark 5 with the saw table and the floating tables - i think there are 3 or 4 tables, have the serial number looks like a date, cant remember, its in the workshop now.
I am missing the two studs Part nos 501290 and 501293 that fit into the cylindrical serrated aluminium thing you twist to lock the the floating table - its called a sleeve and insert assembly 514649
I would like an 10 er or another one ( mark 5) just here there arent many, on this little island, in fact i think this is the only one here - tho there are 9 islands in the group

I'm not sure about the individual parts but the "Accessory Mount Lock" is available as an assembly. The on-line catalog indicates that the individual parts cannot be ordered. I recommend a call to Customer Service (1-800-543-7586).

Oh Well - I saw that it is available from the shopsmith place in The United kingdom, maybe a better deal probably cheaper postage and no hassles with customs duty as I am in The european union, just hope they have one in stock. it costs GBP £ 29.95 there about USD $45.75.

Is there any rust or corrosion of any kind on the end of the quill? My Mark 5 had been left sitting for years with the quill extended about 2 inches and that 2 inches ended up with a good bit of rust on it while the rest of the quill was fine.
If nothing is visible that needs to be sanded and cleaned, then it may just need a little wax. Use some Johnson's Paste Wax (or whatever paste wax might be available to you). Apply, let dry, and buff it off.

hi,
i've just picked up a 510 (and i'm in the UK) so would like to get the self study course completed
the self study course on the SS website in PDF format for download seems the right one - but is unreadable as it is so faint.
The hardcopy for sale, is for the Mark 7.
my questions are:
- is the Mark 7 course still completely valid for a 510?
- if not, does anyone have a decent PDF copy of the 510 course?
i'm happy to buy a second hand hardcopy - but can't find one anywhere (even abebooks globally)

First off welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.
I would like to know if you are referring to the actual Self Study Course or the book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone. The Self Study Course is divided into 10 Lessons (chapters or sections) with a total of 66 assignments. A least that is the way a copy I have purchased in 2001, Revision dated 10/87, is laid out. I have or have seen other copies which are divided into the 10 Lessons. The Self Study Course was normally included along with the Owner's Manual when purchasing a Shopsmith Mark tool. I do not know if the Self Study Course has been updated showing the Mark 7. Even if it has you could still follow the 10 Lessons using another Shopsmith Mark model.
The book Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone is a companion book with additional information about using the Shopsmith tool and dates back to 1953 with the 1st edition using the Shopsmith Model 10ER. The next and later editions show the Mark V in use. Although the current edition for sale new shows the Mark 7 on the cover it is still the 4th edition inside from 1989 showing the Mark V being used. You can see the contents of the book here on the Shopsmith website under Learning in the middle column under Resources labeled Power Tool Woodworking. Do note that the list of sections is in a different order than the chapters in the actual printed book. The link Dusty provided takes you to a PDF copy of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone here on the Shopsmith website. It can also be found here on the Shopsmith website under Learning in the middle column under Resources by clicking on Manuals & Information in the list of documents available to download for free or purchase.
