A few years ago I had 2 coupler ends split. Since then I have wrapped the ends with a couple of turns of electrical tape. No more split ends. I have not had a problem orienting the couplers. Art Sale

Power Coupler

I still have my original power coupler(the one with the rubber in the middle). Many years ago I cracked the plastic on one end, probably due to operating problems. I taped the plastic ends with electrical tape(plastic), until I could get a replacement. This got me by until the new all platic coupler...

This problem is likely caused by the chipper blades not being all the same diameter. they should all be a few thousandths smaller than the outside blades for correct cutting.
A sharpening service would be able to correct this.

You can use lye or oven cleaner. Both are quite hazardous to the skin, eyes etc. but work well on saw blades.

I haven't seen the Shopsmith guide, but I know that on my knife grinder, I have to ensure that the knife is flat when clamped in the fixture to avoid these symptoms. Dirt ,sawdust etc between the knife & the fixture clamping surfaces will cause the knife to be bowed somewhat, affecting the sharp...
