The speed changer has a pulley system where the center part 'floats'. As it goes back and forward, when one side gets bigger/smaller the other gets smaller/bigger.

It is a 1725rpm but as you say it is a moot point. Heck through the VFD you can even run them at higher speeds by bumping the frequency, even on a straight pulley setup I could match the higher speeds of the analog speed changer.

Just as I got me an overpriced speed changer, I sourced a 3 phase 3/4 HP motor... It is a Magnetek model 151350-3. I was surprised at the smaller footprint of the motor.

And I mean it is there as if it was never meant to move nor come out. The ends were pretty stuck as well, but a jaw puller did quick work of those. I imagine as much, but I'm hoping that somebody would have done some testing after all these decades.
Given enough speed it could make for a half-decent overhead/pin router. Half decency would start around 10k RPMs, gaining on said decency the further it goes north from that.

How fast could you safely spin a 10ER?
Eventually I would like to do the 3-phase with variable speed controller mod. The original 10ER with the analog speed changer was able to spin at 6,800rpm. My question is; given new/modern ball bearings and lubricants, how fast could the arbor be safely spun?

It seems to also be a capacitor issue, or partially a capacitor issue. It would work and spin as described with the motor free spinning, as in not mounted with the belt and in the machine. Once mounted it doesn't have enough initial strength to overcome the friction. It may be fixable but as luck ...

I have been rebuilding a 10ER and today I got to replace the original wire. Now when I power it the motor works, but every once in a while it will spin in the opposite direction. If I start spinning it before powering up it maintains that rotational direction. I can see how this could come handy but ...
