Per Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone , the spurs need to be embedded into the wood at least 1/16 of an inch. It sounds like the spurs might not be embedded deeply enough, or perhaps if the stock is soft wood it is not able to retain the spurs.
Here is a quick paraphrase of the ...

Re: Shopsmith bandsaw projects
Very nice! Thanks for posting the great photos. I always wanted to try one of those ring built bowls. By the way, that is a very clever bandsaw table extension!

$399 sounds like a really good deal for the machine with the accessories shown. As for not turning the speed dial down, agreed it is a good habit to get into, but my understanding is that as long as your shop wiring has the amps needed to start the machine in the Fast position no harm ...

From the pictures, it looks like you have found a very nice machine...seems well preserved for its years. The only essential items that I notice are missing are the upper and lower saw guards.
Hope this helps,
Ed

Re: Piece stops spinning with a squealing noise
It sounds like what happened is that the knot caused a jam which, together with the loose belt problem, caused the quill to stop turning. My first thought is that, after adjusting the belt tension as described by Russ, just avoid turning wood with knots. Depending on what you are turning, avoiding ...

Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses
It is great for sanding out the irregularities on turned straight or tapered spindles less than 12 inches long...simply hold the disk against the turning cylinder. Also can be used as a reference plate for table alignment. And of course it is needed if you want to use the Shopsmith sharpening jig.

Re: What is the hole in the top of the model 500 rip fence for?
Follow-up on the "cup center in the fence hole" issue:
Maurice - I tried my live center in the hole in the fence and found no difference between the way it fit and the way the cup center fit. Both centers wobble around in the non-tapered hole. Not sure why your live center would fit so snugly. If ...

Re: What is the hole in the top of the model 500 rip fence for?
John: Good question. My first thought is that the rim of the cup center would not raise up enough to contact the workpiece unless the "dimple" made for the centering pin were needlessly deep. My second thought is that if this sort of interference were a significant issue it would have been mentioned ...

Re: What is the hole in the top of the model 500 rip fence for?
So after thinking about the issues that JPG and the following comments brought up, I set the cup center back into the fence and tried to measure the wobble when the center was loose in the hole. It looks like about 1/8 of an inch or a bit more in all directions. With the set screw tightened, the cup ...

Re: What is the hole in the top of the model 500 rip fence for?
Still not sure how WELL it would work.
I am pleased by how much interest this topic has sparked. Like some of the other folks I also went back to my old editions of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone to see if I could find confirmation of my memory of having done some sanding this way many ...
