We have a small machine shop in our plant, if we're talking about the coiled spring for the quill advance, I drilled a matching hole on the other side and found a same-sized rivet (?) to reattach it to the quill shaft. Worked great, only required a drill press.

Do you have a manual? I've rebuilt a couple, the top roller needs to be turned to apply tension to the built. Spin the knob to the right (I think) until it gets tight. Latch it in place, then slip the belt onto the sander. When you release the lever on the knob, it should unwind, tightening the belt ...

I'm a big fan of "Craigspal" which has a free version that lets you specify which cities and/or states you want to search. I found the same with the spelling and search both "Shopsmith" and "Shop Smith." You can then sort results by date placed, price, city. Pretty handy tool that I tap into daily.

Pictures? Will help the group diagnose your issue a lot better than guessing from what you've written.

One of the parts I look forward to the most when buying a long-forgotten Shopsmith is the bucket/box/crate of parts that comes along with the machine!

On more than one occasion, non-SS parts have been tossed in the container. My favorite so far is an old-tyme toilet flush handle. :D

Picked mine up at Home Depot for a couple bucks apiece.

Are the trunnion posts simply press-fit into the bushings? The carriage table is one item I've never needed to fully dismantle, may need to go that route if some serious soaking doesn't loosen the table any (off to try that now).

Chris - glad you brought this up, I'm having the EXACT same issue on a 1954 greenie that just got blasted, repainted and reassembled (bought it back in June 2009, been working off and on since then). I've been meaning to pose the question out here, and it's completely slipped my mind until I saw ...

What did you use in the quill to mount to the tube you were polishing? I've been using pipe caps with a hand drill that were pretty good, but not always perfect.
