re message from Shopsmith

Quote : Current economic conditions have significantly impacted the woodworking industry. Shopsmith is no exception. Coupled with limited availability of credit, Shopsmith was forced to look to all areas not providing a positive cash flow to reduce costs. It seems to me that regardless of the econom...

SS Jointer

It seem a waste to buy a SS jointer or bandsaw, Stand alone units form others are less expensive, in many cases have better capacity and are without a doubt less trouble to use than having to set up the SS to use them. A Delta Jointer or Planer would seem a much better alternative than to burden the...

Thanks for all the wisdom you have passed along the way Nick, I believe you where the best asset the company had. I will be looking for stand alone tools from this point on simply because the best thing SS had going for them was the education. I will be looking forward to see what your upto next.

Before Ebay get them

I have an old 500 that I am planing to part out on ebay. I was going to restore it to mint but happened upon a 510 in the process of looking for parts. If any of you are looking for any parts, I would gladly work with you directly and avoid the ebay hassle all together. drop me a note if you have an...

Jg, thanks for the imput, I had seem the links before, but the price of the mortising package is out of my budjet for the moment. When starting out, too many things are needed all at once and I just finished the SS rebuild so it will be some time before I can get one of those. I did see that smaller...

I have seen your video on using that corner chisel more than a few times but when I seen the cost of the chisel it put a halt on that option. My SS 510 was not much more than the cost of that chisel when I got it so I may be stuck on the straight chisel for the job. On blind tenons, I may just elect...

about the wood

Thanks to all for the much needed info. And to Nick, thanks for the encouragement on starting with a project that has 28 mortise joints. When I first decided to undertake this addiction, my first purchase was a book caled the complete guide to sharpening. Armed with that book and a few used planes a...

Helping Shopsmith

Perhaps the best thing would be for Shopsmith to help themselves. This is one of the last Great American Companies, the machine is outstanding and for a vast majority of us, only obtainable via the used market. They run fantastic sales all the time, but what if they just lay off all the sales and dr...

Best use of a compressor

One of the most important uses for a compressor can be when using it along with a shop vac. Using both at the same time will remove 99% of the wood dust and such inside the headstock. With a trash bag over an old green unit that was loaded, I was able to hold the shop vac hose in one hand while stic...

About the wood

My bench is clean, tools sharp, and the brand new 1990 510 is finished being refurbished and waiting to cut something. I have a set of plans for a Mission style coffee table and a cut list now my last thought is what kind of wood do I use ? I first thought of pine, I believe the cut list calls for 1...
