Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

Here's one not in the PTWFE. A dozen plus years ago, while building my first CNC, I used the disc as a hand wheel to tap a bunch of holes in the ends of 80/20 extrusion. I had the tap in the drill chuck, the extrusion flat on the table. Sure beat trying to tap by hand, although as I recall my ...

Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

Those "worthless" short hubs can be used for mounting anything one self creates - like a hand wheel mounted on the top aux spindle while doing lathe work(like Cap't Eddie).

I did think about using them to mount something else, but nothing came to mind. The wheel is a good idea. Thanks.

I have ...

Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

I have been debating whether I should buy the hub upgrade. That is what started me thinking about sanding disks and brought me to ask about usage. Years ago, when I did most of my work outside, I used sanding disks a lot. Enough that I have three of them. I have a Disc Sander Dust Chute and what ...

JPG wrote: Wed Jun 03, 2026 2:23 pm One significant difference between the flat/conical disk for edging is the sanding direction.

flat = circular across the grain
conical = with the grain

Assuming grain direction = direction of workpiece feed.
Good point. I bought my conical disks foe smothing plywood edges.

Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

Disk Sanding was a messy job prior to the introduction of the Mark V 510 and the ability of the Lower Saw Guard able to handle the 12" Sanding Disk for dust collection. A stripped-down version of that lower guard is available for use on the Mark 5/V 500.

Just to be inclusive I have tried the ...

Re: 12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

It is great for sanding out the irregularities on turned straight or tapered spindles less than 12 inches long...simply hold the disk against the turning cylinder. Also can be used as a reference plate for table alignment. And of course it is needed if you want to use the Shopsmith sharpening jig ...

12- Flat Sanding Disk Uses

I haven't used my sanding disks for anything other than hand sanding small parts, and only then for parts that are too small to sand on a belt or strip sander without chewing off my fingertips. Thinking about this, I realized that I haven't mounted a disk on my Shopsmith since the late 1980s when I ...

Re: 520 Fence Is Not Square to the Table Surface

Truth of the matter is that at age 87 with macular degeneration (wet in one and dry in the other) I am lucky to detect a 1/8" deviation.

Sorry to hear that. I had an epiretinal membrane (also called a macular pucker) on my retina that was repaired by surgery. During that process, they told me I ...

Re: 520 Fence Is Not Square to the Table Surface

Yup, it really doea sound easy. Now all you have to do is find a saw blade whose kerf is .125" and a board that is .750" thick and then position the fence just the right distance from the blade OR adopt the "close enough for government work" approach.

I already have the saw blade, and my setup ...
