Have you considered a second smaller version of the sliding nuts? Say 10-32 size? I realize that involves a new cutter as well. I can't say that I have. But I can tell you that shoehorning a 1/4-20 insert into the nut, without compromising on the strength requirement, was the biggest technical chal...

Movable sheaves. #10 MACHINE oil. (3in1 turbine sewing machine)
Other moving parts.(wingnuts manually rotated shafts)
Wax tubes. (way bench support posts)
Using it will reveal any thing else needing tlc.

Since I use "unread post" quick link I do not think I miss much. No time restriction there. If I may redirect the 'gripe'; one thing that irks me is lack of feedback when WE(more than one responder) suggest possible causes/solutions and the member requesting assistance falls off the planet...

Osage orange is not easy to saw - blade tends to follow grain.
'Very' sharp blade is needed.
Opinions vary, but blade drift is commonly accepted as typical(normal). Biased feed angle is the accepted solution.

Yer making it complicated. Think of a long blank in the chuck. Shape only the external end(both faces od and id. Cut off and drill the center hole or let the boring cut it off. Think re baby rattle ring turning.
