Re: Pen Turning

I have the Shopsmith live tailstock center. Will that work with the Penn State mandrel?

Pen Turning

I've been using my Shopsmith 510 for a year or more for odd jobs. But I'm ready to try some pen turning. With my 510 came a Nova G3 chuck. Is it possible to do pen turning from stock mounted in the Nova pin jaws (and centerbore from a tailpiece mounted drill chuck) or is something like the Penn Stat...

Update: Great fun here. The motor pan removal and pan Tinnerman clip repairs were very straightforward. However, something I found out that you all probably already know is that the GE 1981 motor has really bad insulation on the stock 16/2 motor leads. When I disconnected them from the switch, the i...

Again to all, thanks for the great information. Combining it all I will: Photo the back of the switch, Disconnect the switch wires, Ease the belt off the motor sheaves in high speed position, Drop the motor pan, Remove the motor from the pan, Repair or replace the Tinnerman clips, Clean out the extr...

I'm not sure how to attach a picture from my iPhone so some guidance there would help. As for the screws, its 2 of the 5 that hold the grey motor pan to the upper headstock. With the belt cover off I can see that they are Tinnerman clips so I can replace these if I can drop this pan enough without t...

Oversize

Thanks for all the info. I may turn it on for 15 minutes to let it mellow out. Did using the next larger screws on the motor pan seem like the right fix. I can't see the clips to know if this will cause any issues.

Unopened 1981 MkV 500 (part 2)

After 33 years of storage this never opened MkV 500 seems to run up and through its speed range without tripping. I will continue to worry about the sealed bearings sitting that long but at least the sheaves are well oiled. Here are some new questions: 1. Apparently during manufacturing the front le...

Go slow

I've twice oiled the holes on the lower and intermediate shafts and then spun the sanding wheel while cycling the speed controller. I'm now waiting for that to flow everywhere it will. I am worried about the "lifetime" sealed bearings since these have sat for 33 years packed with new greas...

Original

Y'all are correct on the HD wax. It says "The Original Formula" in the red band. Guess I was looking for something more obvious based on some older comments on this forum. Got the belt cover off the headstock. Looks good in there. Sheaves look clean. Belts don't seem cracked. No rust on th...

Find

Foster, I was at the sister in laws over the holidays and helping the nephew with Legos (lots of assembly required). The MkV had been passed on to them abruptly from someone else who was moving months before and it was just in her way under the cabinets in the garage. They would never use this clean...
