Thanks for the complements on the kitchen. My wife designed it (and the house). She sketched it out on paper and said make this please. I built it by looking at her sketch. I didn't make any plans, just kind of built it in place. Spent more time starring and thinking than actually making. I am sure ...

Owen, Tell us more about the finishing process. What stain and what urethane did you use? Your finished product looks fantastic! Sincerely, Ron309753 It's been too long for me to remember the exact stain I used. All I can remember is that it was a outdoor deck stain and that it was used more like a...

The swans are actually made of metal. We were lucky to find them on sale in a small tourist shop in Saint Andrews New Brunswick. I was going to fill that space above the door with stained glass, but the house sold first. Here is another photo of the swans. In the foreground you can see a large mobil...

MDF that I used is the brown stuff (same as the photo from the home depot). It has pretty good compressive strength on the sides, but the edges can be easily damaged if bumped. It is definitely not waterproof. If you use it in a wet area you must seal it with something or it will swell up very quick...

Trust me, I was not proud of using mdf in the Kitchen, because this was going to be our dream home and retirement home. I just used it to get by until we could afford the good stuff. We got many quotes for kitchen cabinets for this kitchen and the cheapest came in at just over $20,000 and as high as...

I posted the same photo in the MDF thread. Can you believe that I made this kitchen out of mdf (what you can see anyway). All routered by hand (No router table). Every edge and grove was done with a hand held Porter Cable router. Most of the wood was cut with a hand held skill saw too. I used anothe...

I have a love hate relationship with MDF. When I was building my house I used it for all the decorative features throughout the house (window trim, floor molding, wainscoting, ceiling medallions, and even cabinets). I literally bought a few tons of it and cut and routered miles of it. It nearly crus...

From the photo's, it looks like you have it off most of the way. Try what the others have suggested first (penetrating oil). Have you tried tapping it back in a little. Perhaps something is jammed in the flat part of the shaft and as you try to pull it out it is getting tighter. My next step would b...
