Thanks for the quick reply John. I called it a knob because that's what it was called in the original instructions I have. It's the knurled ring just behind the spindle shaft end. In fact it's called the spindle knob in the parts list. Anyway I'll probably align it with the flat or it will bug me by ...

I was looking at the installation instructions for the lower blade guard and saw that when installing the blade arbor on the spindle you should align the blade arbor set screw with the"puttied" set screw on the spindle knob as a guide since it is aligned with the flat on the spindle shaft.
