Re: My Latest Turning Project, Blackwood and Holly Goblets

Really impressive. How did you turn the rim? http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/download/file.php?id=35605 Everett, I shaped the rim with a dremel after I finished turning it. If you look closely at the first picture you will notice the rim is not quite even, the segments between the "petals&qu...

Re: My Latest Turning Project, Blackwood and Holly Goblets

This is outstanding work. I have been thinking about trying a Barley twist on my CNC router with a rotary axis but to do one manually is true craftsmanship that I will probably never achieve. It's not as hard as you think! Just time consuming. Cutting a barley twist with the contrasting wood showin...

Re: My Latest Turning Project, Blackwood and Holly Goblets

Thanks all. I came up with a faster method to cut curved segments than what I used before by utilizing the band saw with a specialized circle cutting jig. Though cutting and gluing up the cup sections was faster than the bowl, all in all this project took longer as I underestimated how long the stem...

My Latest Turning Project, Blackwood and Holly Goblets

Here's a link to the full album , here's another link to some pro...

Re: Amazing turning project, done on a Shopsmith

Yup, you guessed right, the dye was applied after final turning. I applied it with a small brush carefully staying inside the lines. The dye, of course, spread out slightly from where it was applied, however it stopped at the veneer line. The double glue line with the black veneer in between was eno...

Re: Amazing turning project, done on a Shopsmith

Cool. One of the best engineers I ever worked with was a physics major. PhD, actually. The guy could MacGyver anything. But he didn't have your aesthetic sensibilities. That's a rare combination. And now, I'm probably going to push my crystal ball past the breaking point. But what the heck, this is...

Re: Amazing turning project, done on a Shopsmith

BedHedNed, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you have computer-programming experience. I've never seen anyone else figure out how to manipulate quotes on this forum platform on their third post! ;) Furthermore, based solely on how methodical you were in developing your process and t...

Re: Amazing turning project, done on a Shopsmith

It must have taken nerves of steel to start slicing the finished blank into rings ... especially freehand. Oh it did, believe me. That's actually the only reason I took pictures of it before turning it; I was proud of myself just for making the blank and decided to take some pictures in case I dest...

Re: Amazing turning project, done on a Shopsmith

I just saw this project posted over on LumberJocks, and thought you guys would like to see it too. Check it out . Flower bowl.JPG The turning was done on a Shopsmith with a speed reducer. Here's a link to some process photos . I strongly suspect that the process used to "stretch it out" (...
