JPG, as I await the part to come in on my machine, I wanted to check in with you on the stop/start procedure.
It sounds as though it is NOT necessary to turn the control to slow,before turning off but more importantly to make sure the speed control is no t moved while the motor is off.

I noticed in Nick Engler's Sawdust Sessions that he often shut down his machine without moving speed control at all.
I was trying to reconcile this with the accepted procedures.

This is just a general question.
I plan to oil/ggrease every part I can touch.
On the shafts and the worm gear, is it better to use a white grease or oil

No it appears to be gone. I did find those in the motor pan but they appeared to be crushed.
Is there supposed to be a "cup" for the button bearing to ride in??

JPG, LOOKS LIKE I'VE FOUND THE PROBLEM.
IT APPEARS THEY DROVE THE BUTTON BEARING SO DEEP INTO THE SHAFT END NO LONGER HAS A CUP FOR THE BEARING RIDE IN.
I'M GOING TO TRY TO ATTACH THESE PIX.

JPG, I'm going to take some additional pictures to see if you spot any other problems.
Assuming that I am unable to recover the button bearing, can that part be purchased from Shopsmith or do I need to buy the whole "pork chop" piece.
As soon as I get some different pix, I'll post them.

I've learned my lesson about allowing others to use it.

I looked for the bearing in the motor pan, no luck. Hard to get hand under motor. Few metal shavings , not huge but some. Small washer (very light weight ).
Looking gloomy as far as fixing this mess.
Looks like I will be sending the head for repair.
IF I CAN TAKE IT OFF.
