Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

Your erroneous mark was too close to the bottom corner?
That is correct

Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

The instructions say to scribe a zero line onto the gauge 7/16" from the bottom corner of the angled section where the knife touches. I just measured poorly when I scribed the line so the knife appeared to be touching the gauge too high up making it seem like it needed to be lowered.

Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

Boy do I feel like a dope. Went back through the steps and found I mismeasured the zero line! That's what I get for trying to tackle something like this before my coffee has kicked in.

Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

All sawdust cleaned out of the slots where the knives go and the height adjusting screws are bottomed out. They are OEM shopsmith knives. I will post some pictures later.

As for the knives hitting the gauge - my first guess is that the knives are set too high. The cutting edge of the knives should just "kiss" the gauge when set properly.
The knives are touching the gauge when they are completely bottomed out which is why I am confused.

Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

Those are the instructions I followed at first. Then I looked in the ptwfe book and saw where the gauge looks different. The area where the zero line would go is an arc but the gauge I received and the picture in the I instructions you attached do not show the arc. I was wondering if something chang...

Re: INSTALATION OF PLANER BLADES

I recently acquired a used pro planer. I changed out the pulleys and cleaned it up then had the knives sharpened through a local woodworking supply store. I tried reinstalling the knivestoday using the shopsmith gauge that bought from shopsmith right after getting the planer. The gauge looks differe...

Re: Installing Jointer Blades

The mark is at top dead center? Yep TDC as set up by a dial indicator gauge and then reconfirmed after setting all 3 blades. Really does speed up changeovers! Cheers, John Sounds like you might have watched the same video I did. I used this method and it worked great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re: Quill Spring Issues

I opened up the quill spring housing over the weekend. I did not see any buildup of sawdust and no obvious signs of rust, but I used some LPS greaseless lubricant and it is operating much better now.

Re: Quill Spring Issues

Would something like TopCote be a good lubricant to use in this case?
