Are you dripping superglue down the inside of the kit before putting the tubes in? (Let dry after dripping the superglue, then, run a dowel w/ sandpaper, or a needle file if the pen tubes don't fit).

You said the gfi blew. Did it blow INSTANTLY when you turned the SS on, or did it take a while?

Shopsmith brand lathe tools are perfectly good. Just be sure to sharpen after receipt. Very few lathe tools are sharp "out of the box."

For doing laser-cut inlays, I would buy direct from the supplier. Not that I have issues with Rockler or Woodcraft or other resellers (I don't think), but I think I prefer buying direct from the small business.
