Yes. I definitely tested the spindle and spun it in the quill housing to feel the bearings. There's a knocking at each full rotation and the spindle had a slight slap/sloppiness, too. I ordered a new spindle and the coupler---so I'll probably have an extra coupler when I'm finished.

I see. I think I put way too much strain on it, trying to knock down a Douglas fir 4x4. I should have chamfered it on the tablesaw first. Redwood/cedar isn't so tough.

If I hear bad news from shipping, I'll take you up on your offer!

You keep an extra one on hand? Is that necessary? My only worry is that they won't be open for another week!!!!! :)
If it's backordered, I will definitely take you up on the offer.

JPG,
Thank you VERY much for including the link to the part! I can't reach customer service--must be closed for the holiday. At least I can get an order in for a replacement.

Thanks for all your replies. No the quill wasn't overextended. The set screw was in place. I think maybe the plastic just degraded. The machine is about 30 years old. I have removed the quill assembly, which was easy, and have removed the two broken halves of the coupler and it's definitely a ...

Excellent! Thank you very much!
How do you remove and replace the plastic coupler? So far, removing the quill doesn't seem too difficult.
I think I messed up by having the quill extended too far while turning. I can see it's not designed to take a lot of torque.

Spindle Assembly not spinning

I was turning a 4x4 and suddenly....
Looking inside the housing I can see the shaft on the spindle pull right out of the plastic coupler. The plastic coupler is cracked and broken. Are there instructions available for removing the spindle assembly/quill etc.? and is that plastic coupler really part ...
