Mark V Repair: Recap

Finally finished this repair so I thought I'd give a recap: The problem I had was that the bearing that contacts the porkchop had come apart. I took this opportunity to go ahead and take the headstock apart and give it a good cleaning, but I didn't replace bearings as I probably ought to. Next time,...

I guess I may order some from Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=insulating+varnish&x=0&y=0 I could go to Grainger, but there's not one within 20 miles and I sure don't need a dozen cans :) I'll call a couple of electrical supply shop...

Insulating varnish (formvar): where?

Do any common stores carry insulating varnish? I don't see it in the Home Depot online catalog.

There is a Grainger in town, and some electrical supply stores, but none nearby - I was hoping to pick it up without a long drive.

Thanks,
Nathan

First step is probably to blow out all of the sawdust. You might want to go ahead and open it up and make sure you've cleaned it all out.

How do you know that the capacitor is good?

'Newowner' thread: sticky?

I really appreciate JPG40504's "Newowner" thread, it's a great resource. Should we suggest to the moderator that it be made a "Sticky Thread", so that new users can find it right away? (vbulletin page for sticky threads: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/ ) Also, should it be re...

Thanks - I picked up a 2ft piece of 2-strand 14-2 this afternoon and will give it a shot. I have some electronic background (rusty) but I tend to learn by experience - and some of those lessons have turned out to be "never do that without the proper tools and training" ... an expensive les...

I'm resurrecting this thread because my GE motor has exactly the same issue. What particularly concerns me is that the insulation is brittle and cracking all the way down to where it ties into the windings. Is that a DIY job or should I drop it off at the electrical shop? I do...
