Here's the setup, from what you said it looks to be correct

OK, that's how I have it, but I also put a flat washer between the nut and the base because it seems the nut wanted to slip into the groove without it. It just won't cut properly; it takes a huge chunk off the front of the wood then doesn't cut at all after that. Must be an adjustment thing.

OK, so there is no washer under the nut?
