Re: Lost One of Our Great Contributors

Ed very generously helped me out with some stuff missing from my machine when I first got it and I had just joined here. Though I didn't know him well, he seemed like kind generous person. My condolences to his family and friends, including friends here

Re: Missing set screw on 510 tablesaw fence

That setscrew is used to MISalign the fence if you're using the flat sanding disk. It's not used at any other time. Don't worry about it!

Re: Upgrading a 500 (1985)

As RonKlein said you will want the Alignment Gauge for setting the 520 Fence Rails. Sorry I don't currently have a picture of it. Quick sketch of the gauge(s -- there are two) IMG_1012.jpeg It appears to be milled from 1/8" thick aluminum angle. The 3-3/4" length is unimportant -- longer ...

Re: Upgrading a 500 (1985)

Can I use a 510 table and attach the 520 fence rails to it and use the 520 fence? Searched the forum and found out that both tables are the same size so I am assuming that the 520 fence will work as long as I have the 520 rails. Am I correct? If yes then I need to get on ebay! :D :D :D Yes. I had a...

Re: Upgrading a 500 (1985)

I've got a my Grandad's greenie that I upgraded to 510 spec using parts from a 510 I bought cheap (then loaded up with the 500 parts and sold on, with appropriate disclaimers). The difference in tables is an absolute game-changer. With apologies to happy 500 owners, I'd never go back. The difference...

Re: Re-outfitting a 510 SS to table saw mode

My question is, has anyone bought the stand alone riving knife for non through cuts? If so, does it help? https://www.shopsmith.com/product-page/riving-knife-upgrade-for-all-marks-except-mark-v-500 Many thanks, Karl I have one but haven't used it enough to say. Can't see how it wouldn't help though...

Re: Re-outfitting a 510 SS to table saw mode

Binding becomes significant when the warpage presses against the plate. This occurs because the tooth set is making additional cutting at the back side of the blade. The difference between the kerf width and the plate width defines the amount of warpage movement that may occur until pressure is bei...

Re: Re-outfitting a 510 SS to table saw mode

It isn't. The reason for the question regarding kerf width vs plate thickness is that that difference is the maximum amount of tolerance of the kerf closing. i.e. the clearance between the kerf and the plate. I was wondering if the thin kerf clearance is less than the full width clearance, hence ma...

Re: Re-outfitting a 510 SS to table saw mode

My earlier question was regarding the tooth set on the thin kerf vs the full kerf. How would that be relevant WRT to the riving knife? The thickness of the riving knife vs the width of the kerf!!! Very relevant. If I understand JPG correctly, he's asking about the difference in the width of the car...
