Re: A Speed Control Lubrication Improvement Idea

Another thought about cooling air routing through the Mark V headstock. We know that the motor fan creates a low air pressure condition inside the headstock, and all during headstock operation dusty air is sucked in through seams etc., through the motor, and out the exhaust port under the headstock....

Mark V Wheeled Base Platform Proposal

I am considering fabbing a Mark V base platform shown. The current retractable caster wheel system is OK, but on rough and/or uneven surfaces, shimming or blocks are required to eliminate machine wobble. And we may want to bring the machine to a true level, which the current design cannot do well. I...

Re: Speed Control Issue

Continuing this thread, I have implemented some mods to my Mark V headstock speed dial which I think may be beneficial. Shopsmith Mark V speed dial drift occurs at higher speeds. This speed drift is undesirable and unsafe. This drift problem is further aggravated by vibration, which usually accompan...

Re: Parts for "new" 1987 510

I suppose that is what the swivel tee is for - outboard leg support when table is tilted. So keep the swivel tees around for use in such (blessedly rare) cases. The best of both worlds would be a swivel tee that could be setscrew-locked at any angular position. I just don't like those swivel tees wo...

Re: Parts for "new" 1987 510

Here are photos of the McMaster 4698T91 t-rail connector. Shown next to the Shopsmith standard connector. Holes are sloppy in both connectors because they are designed to clear a "nominal" 3/4" Schedule 40 pipe, which is actually 1.05" OD. Shopsmith rail is 1.00" OD tubing. ...

Re: Parts for "new" 1987 510

I think the Shopsmith leg (referring just to the leg, # 514529) is already a friction-cam mechanism. The good thing about them is they will lock at any length within the range. I have had no trouble getting them to lock - just need both hands to do it. You do not want an adjustable leg that locks on...

Re: Parts for "new" 1987 510

Have a look at McMaster # 4698T96. I need two of those "speed-rail' type fittings ( long ago I bought two of 555627 leg kits but i just found out they only fit a model 500). Shopsmith will sell me ONE tube fitting for $47.43. No thanks. The Hollaender 17E-5 3/4" looks like an identical mat...

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Shopsmith, Inc. Has A New Owner

Surprised to hear this. Hope springs eternal. My one live encounter with the previous owner (not John) left me with some concerns about the fate of the company, which now rests with this new owner. Profitably selling Shopsmith today and tomorrow will require wise management and realistic $$ expectat...

Re: Woodpeckers Sharpening Jig

OP said something about small chisels not seating properly in his "Woodpecker" guide, and causing skew. See attached photos. I do not know what is typical with such guides, but mine has a radiused feature which I believe is supposed to accommodate a range of chisel geometries. It does need...
