Just ordered my PP upgrade DYI

I think he means buying be an unusual route.

I had to do that because in the UK, our only SS supplier can't supply what I want and Shopsmith will not play ball.

This makes me mad, because I've been an SS customer for several years and it's not my fault there's an issue between them and the distributor. As an existing customer, I really expect better than that.

Having said that, at least they do talk to me over the phone.

It would be interesting to know why Shopsmith turns down international orders. I am certain that it has nothing to do with "people" and everything to do with the border. Some sort of prohibition that prevents shipping across a border.

As far as I know, it has been this way for ever. It may be contractual arrangements with the Shopsmith dealers BUT Australia, the UK and Canada----hmmm----Crown Colonies????

AFAIK there's no longer a contract with the UK supplier. If you want to know more, PM me.

When I spoke with Shopsmith, I was actively encouraged to have a friend in the USA forward items to me.

There are several reasons why Shopsmith might not ship offshore:

1) Honoring warranty would be difficult and would have to be factored into the dealer price.
2) The dealer would have to be trained to deal with service and on things like the Power Pro, where even SS may not have all the answers yet, that might give the SS reputation issues.
3) Cost of shipping is horrendous. This cost would be passed to the customer, who would complain like hell about the $ price comparison.
4) Import duty/taxes can be high. On top of any taxes charged by the US government, to the UK there would be around 30% added to the initial price and to the shipping. Customers will compare that to the USD price and not like it.

I think it's the money. Shopsmith would have to comply with each country's regulations in order to sell directly to that country. For example, they probably would need a CE mark to prove compliance with the relevant EU guidelines in order to sell directly in Europe. And I'm not sure that the Shopsmith, in its current configuration, complies with all of those regs, so it might require re-engineering, which takes $$$.

The same situation happens within the US. For example, many ag chem products are not sold in certain states because the limited sales potential means it's not worth the extra cost to get them registered in those states.

Supply and demand- Shopsmith would probably re-engineer as necessary if they were guaranteed sales of a few million units!

As far as selling to Canada, there is no duties between Canada and US as long as the product is US made. And that IS since the 10th anniversary in 2004 of the NAFTA agreement.
Of course, sale tax would be charge to me by the canadian post office or delivry service.
I have been told by SS that they are looking into it ... right now I have to order by phone and through a US customer that would send me the order. Or else I would have to go and get it from that US person but I would still have to declare it and pay canadian sale tax on the value of it 5% and Quebec sale tax of 8.5%. Canadian $ is almost at par right now so .... get the rum ready !

Like right now, a special is on until oct 20th, if you buy a power pro or power pro upgrade kit, you can get the double tilt upgrade for only 100$.
I cannot have that special through my canadian distributor.
That is why I feel SS should sell directly to us canadian at least for those specials.
Anyway, I think you understand my point ...
For UK, well there is that ocean to cross, fairly expansive travel ....

For UK, well there is that ocean to cross, fairly expansive travel ....

Find out where there is a Lowes demo going on and order it over the phone from Lowes and have it shipped to a Lowes near the border. Then pick it up, the upgrade is small enough to fit on a car seat.
