Before buying, I'd make sure parts are still available. Makita parts support is generally good, but they can be expensive. If you look at it make sure the feed rollers are in very good shape. I've got a 400mm in pieces, because I can't decide if I want to spend about $400 on parts. Last time I checked, a feed roller for my was about $260-280.

I don't know about the Makita, but I love my Hitachi. But then I only paid $100 bucks for it at an auction. When it was brand new in 92 I think it went for over 2 grand.

The motor on the Makita planer is a universal type with brushes so they are louder than your induction motors like on the Shopsmith. The rubber feed roller on mine isn't damaged it the steel shaft that got chewed up along with the bearing/bushing and adjuster.

The paint is original. I am 99% sure I got it from the original owner. As Art mentioned, it is very loud. Hearing protection required.
