Speed Increaser Part Question

Post by msmith1199 »

My first question as a new user:
I bought my Mark V in 1984. It's lived in my garage almost unused since that time. I used it off and on over the years, but not more than about 10 times. Now I'm finally retired and I'm going to start wood working. In the last 27 years the Shopsmith has moved to four different houses along with all the parts. Well I went out today to start playing with it and seeing if I could find the parts, and some things are missing. Most of them I can figure out and order some new ones on the website, but the one I can't figure out is on the speed increaser. To give you an idea of how long ago I bought this thing, I didn't even remember that I bought the speed increaser and didn't know I had it. I was going to order one to do shaping and luckily I went to inventory the parts and found I already had it.

Okay, enough history, here's what I appear to be missing. I can't connect the speed increaser to the headstock. Actually I can connect it, but there appears to be some type of part missing that allows the drive shaft on the headstock to engage the big plastice collar that is inside the speed increaser. I assume there is some type of part that attaches to the drive shaft and then engages with the speed increaser. I don't see that part listed anyplace on Shopsmith's website. Anybody got any ideas? I have sent an email to Shopsmith, but they say it may take a few days to get back to me.

I can't check right now as it's 2am in the UK, but ISTR the part you need is a drive hub, the same as the one on the headstock that connects to accessories and is held on with a set screw.

As a temporary measure, you could probably use the one on the headstock, by moving it onto the main shaft.

Part number 503740

May I suggest a call to Shopsmiths toll free number to discover availability or perhaps their take on your situation. Email has not been the best means of discovering answers. However a free phone call can work wonders. 1-800-543-7586 that number has opened a new world for owners as the folks that answer know their stuff and share knowledge in a friendly way. Fjimp

So it's a universal part that works with other things? I don't have any other accessories so I don't have any other part that looks like it would work. I'll see if one of the other accessories on the website lists the part.

You need an accessory drive hub (five grooves) with a 5/8" bore to mount on the quill.

Problem solved. Thanks guys, your replies told me what to search for so I found what I needed. So almost $200 later and I ordered all the things I was missing with the exception of my lathe tools. I have no idea how I lost those, but the last time I remember seeing them was probably 15 years and two houses ago. I'm sure they'll turn up as soon as I buy new ones.
