Spring housing moved and now need help please

Hi Everyone -
after a succesful maintenance period yesterday - replacing polv v and drive belt with a new link belt - I think I did something dumb - I was digging out the putty on the setscrew above the spring housing (so it matched the one on the quill) and to clean the thread, I released the setscrew, and the spring housing moved - (I think I had the quill extened as well, cant remember. what did releasing the setscrew do?

OK so my problem How to get the spring housing back to where it was and maybe you can help to tell me exactly where it was cant remember that either - the feed stop with the measurements on it is now not where it was??

OK looked at that sawdust session - good info- but not helping too much - do I release the tension, of the spring as per the sawdust session and then release the setscrew on the spring housing and turn it to the correct position and then retension the spring as per the sawdust session? - if so then where does the spring housing get positioned? - Just been to the workshop to check it - there is a flat on the housing (mine is now at the 11 oclock position and a tab, (which is now at the 5 oclock position.

Sorry about that. Guess I should have viewed the session again before I posted.

The flat is for the set screw. If properly positioned, screwing down the setscrew should lock the spring housing in the proper position.

I believe the procedure for tensioning the quill spring was covered in the Sawdust Session.

There is a notch in the spring housing that is used as a reference in conjunction with the scale for setting the depth stop on the quill extension. The notch should be at the 12 o'clock position. With the quill retracted, I would rotate the housing clockwise until the notch is at 12 o'clock and tighten the set screw. Then check tension on the quill and re-tension if necessary.

excellent response - thanks guys will re read it and then off to the workshop to fix - I have to feed myself and the chickens and the cats - seems like the animals dont know that the clocks went back

OK thanks to all Job Done - it was simple and quite painless - It never ceases to amaze me that the Shopsmith is such an elegantly simple machine that in the hands of the capable can produce complex creations. INGENIOUS!!

Glad you got er done. If there is a next time with similar conditions(different area of the machine), remove the setscrew, illuminate the threaded hole, look into the hole for the mark left by the setscrew originally, and align the mark with the hole, reinstall the setscrew and tighten it. No need to 'create' extra complexity!;)

This assumes you are not wanting to change the positioning.
