removing center wood with a router?

A little refresher help need here.

I am making a candy dish.

I need to remove the center of the dish.

I am planning on drilling out most of the center with a forstner bit, which will leave a little pilot hole on the bottom of the dish.

this seems better than routering out the center. The routed out area will be about 1 & 1/4 inch deep and I think it may be to much for a router vs. the forstner bit.

If this is a reasonable way, then after the forstner bit does it's thing would I best be using my router bit for a smooth bottom my putting it in the SS in drill press mode and then "cleaning out" the bottom that way.

Most of the ways I have seen, they use a router to finish cleaning the bottom. Here is a good video CMT's bowl & tray video I have not made one yet, but it is on my list.

You'll set your drill press depth to about an 1/8" less deep than you want the bottom to be. The router bit will then take away the dimple.

You will probably need an extension, too.

Although it is possible to do it free hand, I don't recommend it. It's better to make or buy a template. They are simple to make.
