I'm going to need to replace my motor shaft as well
I have a buffing arbor attachment that spins on a live center and is held by the drill chuck. Unfortunately on the maiden voyage of that system I forgot to tighten down the motor and the shaft slid off of the live center spinning freely and it bent the hell out of the end of that shaft. I have a mark V from 1994 so does anyone know the parts I need? I suppose it's just the shaft but are there variations?
Thanks

There are variations. A one bearing quill and more that one two bearing quill versions. (Greenie vintage ignored)majryg wrote:I have a buffing arbor attachment that spins on a live center and is held by the drill chuck. If you ARE referring to the 5/8" quill shaft, I doubt it is 'bent'. Gouged/scratched probably. If so judicious filing should make it useful again.

Can you post some pictures of what was bent on your thread? Thanks.
I have an assortment of various Shopsmith quill and other shafts along with the capability to test for bent shafts. Let me know if you would be interested.

Main shaft & Bearing removal from Headstock
I had no problem removing the main shaft and bearing assembly from my old inherited greenie (repainted pink) that I was going to refurbish and repaint. I watched Nick's ~ how to video's. Made a list of parts to rebuild the SS then found a used Mark V on e-bay for $100 that needed a motor so the seller said, and it would be ready to run. I was going to put my inherited motor in the e-bay SS. In checking out the SS I pulled the motor, repaired some loose connections and plugged in and the motor runs fine. Found the control sheave wide open and the belt was catching in the bottom causing the motor to humm and not start. Also found that someone had forced the speed control without rotating the shaft. The gilmer belt pulley was loose on the shaft and could be rotated easily, spinning on the shaft. I have not been successful in removing the shaft and bearing assembly from the headstock housing. The inside bearing will not follow through the housing opening which holds the assembly in place. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to remove the main drive assembly?

Which direction are you trying to move it? Is it possible the 'front'(inner) bearing is getting cocked in the bore/shaky wrote:I had no problem removing the main shaft and bearing assembly from my old inheriated greenie (repainted pink) that I was going to refurbish and repaint. Thanks JPG. I am trying to move it to the left. The right bearing will not move more than an 1/8th or 1/16th of an inch upon entering the bore so I removed the left bearing and the gilmer belt pulley to check for rough gouges in the bore. Couldn't see any ridges or rough spots like your pictures show, where the set screw on the pulley had grooved a ridge inside the casting.JPG40504 wrote:Which direction are you trying to move it? How are you 'pushing'. Have you tried using the quill?
It 'sounds' like it is getting cocked and wedging. Some pix might help us diagnose.

I think your probably right. I tried pushing it out with the quil but it wouldn't budge. Finally got it to move using the quil shaft from my basketcase unit tapping (forcing ) it with a rubber mallet, after using sand cloth on the opening and waxing the bearing and casting. Between 2 units I hope to have 1 operating eventually.
