PSI sharpening system
Moderator: admin
You are correct, I looked at mine and the steel discs with the shorter hub do not have a through hole. The longer hub DO have a through hole, my bad. Personally, I would probably go the accessory side route for the sharpening disc as opposed to putting a sanding disc and extending out from the quill whatever I am turning. Additionally, I would not want the possible interference between the disc and whatever lathe chisel I am using.

I was just suggesting a way to 'duplicate' the original idea with available ss parts. Not having actually tried this, I do not know which is preferable, but I can see possible inadvertent body contact with the disc on the lathe mount side. I really think the back side has more utility.

It's not a shopsmith solution, but it is the one I use.
I keep my oil stones on the bench when using my lathe. If I know I'll be sharpening frequently due to either the quantity of turning or the material or both, I have set my strip sander (just a cheapy strip/disc sander not a SS) on a board to the left of my lathe. It's readily available when I need it.
