Microsoft Essentials is a good free anti-virus program. It is what I use and it works well.
However, no anti-virus program can solve/prevent all problems that arise from clicking where you shouldn't. I recommend learning to use each of the following. They are each different, and each have their place: CrapCleaner, AdAware, MalwareBytes.
But first and foremost, teach her not to click where she shouldn't.

The best anti-virus is user behavior.
For prevention of web based trojans, I like Firefox with the NoScript plug-in.
Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty good security software.
Avast! and AVG are good anti-virus.
For cleaning, there is MalwareBytes and Iobit Advanced System Care.
Everything mentioned above is free. Don't even think about paying for Norton or McAfee. They offer no better protection than the free options and slow down your system.

Definatly use firefox instead of IE - a lot less problems.
AVG free version for antiviris is usually rated as high or higher than paid for programs.
Comodo firewall free version again rated very highly.
CCleaner run it once in a while to clean up the junk that gets left behind (with the default setting you are 99.9% safe in letting it do the work for you)
Malwarebytes again run it once in while to clean up the junk.
As said above tell her to stay off of sites you don't allow her to get onto that is the safest way to operate.

How does this differ from not enabling java scripts?

You might want to look at
ClamWin Antivirus. It's free (GPL) open source software.
If you don't want to deal with viruses etc don't use Windows.
